YAMAHA Japan – SD493 Snare Drum. 14″ x 3.5″ Seamless Brass Piccolo Shell. “Vintage” January 1994 – KH 4054. Please read the FULL DESCRIPTION , as the listing and pictures have changed!! I have added a picture from an original Yamaha Drum advertisement from the late 1980s. It shows the SD493 with the original strainer system and aluminum Power Hoops. My Experience & Knowledge Concerning YAMAHA Drum Restoration. YAMAHA Drums, and more specifically, YAMAHA Drums 1980-now. I’m not a professional instrument repair shop, but I’ve been repairing drums and other instruments almost my entire life. I have a very detail oriented approach to restoring these drums, which involves painstakingly tracking down the original parts if possible, and always using the correct parts for that model regardless. HISTORY of this Snare Drum. This was a special model that YAMAHA released for a limited time starting in the late 80’s, as an addition to the 900 / 9 Series / Recording Custom Snare Drums of the time. Almost all of the other Recording Custom Snares: the Steel SD-29 and the Wood SD-09 models; used the Parallel Strainer System and Extended Snare Wires. However, all of the other Brass models: the SD-495, SD-496, and SD-498; did not have the ability to use the Extended Snare Wires. This special brass piccolo snare with the extended snare wires was a favorite of many famous studio drummers during the 1990s. Grading Scale for USED Drums. Drums that are UNUSED (NOS / AAA+++) will be listed as NEW OTHER. Mint (A+) – Perfectly functional, with no noticeable cosmetic flaws, but still used. EXL = Excellent (A) – Perfectly functional, but with only some very light cosmetic flaws. G/VG = Good/Very Good (B/B+) – 1 Slight functional issue &/or light cosmetic flaws. Poor/Fair (C/C+) – Slight Functional Issues &/or significant cosmetic flaws (pitting/rust). Damaged (D) – Major Functional Issues (parts not working) & major cosmetic flaws. Drums that are NON-FUNCTIONAL (F) will be listed as For Parts or Not Working. NOTE: Minus sign (-) next to a grade means the Drum is missing irreplaceable original parts (Hoops, Strainer / Butt, Lugs). This does not include easily replaceable parts (Tension Rods, snare wires, drum heads). My overall grading of this SD493 Snare Drum based on the conditions listed above is. GRADE of (B) = Good. The shell has some of noticeable rust and oxidation, as well as some light pitting and chrome loss on the aluminum POWER HOOPS. However, the snare drum is complete, with almost all of the original parts. DETAILED DESCRIPTION (Part by Part). (Please Read the FULL DESCRIPTION). YAMAHA Seamless Brass Shell – 14″ x 3.5″. The Brass Shell is in good condition, but there are some rust and oxidation spots on the outside of the shell. The inside of the Shell is in good condition as well, but there are some of the usual fingerprint oxidation marks. YAMAHA – SD493 / KH 4054. Q Z usually would indicate that this drum was made in December 1980 (actually 1990). NOTE: There were many times in the 1990s that Yamaha used the 2-Letter’Serial #. It is important to keep in mind the era / time period that a certain Drum was made, when using the Serial No. To determine the date that a specific drum was manufactured. Based on the two-letter serial number of KH, and my own knowledge of when these vintage snare drums were produced, I believe that this snare drum was made in January 1994. The two letters of the serial no. Have a space between them, and it’s possible that this is meant to signify a 1990’s drum. The Badge is in excellent condition, with no scratches or damage. One of the corners of the badge is beginning to separate from the shell. The Air Vent is secure and free of rust. YAMAHA SD493 Brass Double Snare Lugs. All of the Lugs are complete and original, but there is some noticeable oxidation on many of them. The Lugs consist of a brass plate on each side of the shell (inner and outer), and then two separate, square brass lug casings. Some of the Lugs appear to be pulling away from each other very slightly, going towards the hoops. This is a very common problem with this lug design, and that’s why I suspect it was only used on a few special snare drum models. It is significantly better than most SD493 s that Ive seen, and it is very hard to get a good look at this in the pictures. SD493 Strainer System w/ Extenders. YAMAHA SD-9000 (L) Throw-Off. YAMAHA SD-9000 (R) Adjustable Butt. The SD-9000 Strainer System consists of a Throw-Off and Adjustable Butt, which are both original, and include both of the necessary extenders needed to give the strainer system clearance from the hoops on the short/skinny piccolo snare drum shell. Both of the knobs on each part include the springs, but not the thin, clear plastic washers. The lever has a small bend, which I fixed enough to clear the back of the strainer and disengage the snare wires. Some of the parts are slightly loose, but the lever still holds tight when upright. Both of the extended snare gates are complete and fully functional. The whole strainer system is set up for the extended snare wires, and is completely ready to play! YAMAHA 3.0mm Aluminum POWER HOOPS. The Hoops are both original, and are in very good condition, with only some light chrome loss on both hoops. There is some very light pitting and very light scratches in some spots. The snare-side gates have noticeable cosmetic scratches, as well as some very light rust in some spots. The butt-side gate also has a very small bend / dent in the center. Both of the hoops include the original YAMAHA POWER HOOP stickers! YAMAHA 30mm Tension Rods. YAMAHA Metal Tension Rod Washers. All of the (x20) Tension Rods are original, and are the correct specially-shortened-length Yamaha parts for this snare drum. The special short tension rods are all fully functional, with no thread damage or rust on any of the rods. All of the (x20) Tension Rod Washers are original as well, but some of them may have some light oxidation on the top side. GIBRALTAR SL-4776 Extended Snare Wires. The Snare Wires are brand-new replacements! They are the perfect length for the Yamaha extended snare strainer systems. YAMAHA Concert Snare batter. 188 Coating – Made in Japan. The batter drumhead is brand-new and unplayed! The REMO snare-side is used. If we agree upon a reasonable offer / price beforehand, I can change the price of the listing to the price we agreed on.
