Couesnon Bb Long Bell Piccolo Trumpet Belonging to Henry Nowak
This Couesnon Monopole Conservatoire long bell silverplated 3 valve Bb piccolo trumpet, number 22952, has an impressive provenance. Accepts a Bach cornet mouthpiece and believed to date from the 1940s or 1950s. It certainly dates from no earlier than 1931 when Couesnon et Cie was reorganized (incorporated) to become Couesnon, S. The extra tubing gives the appearance of a lower keyed instrument. It has a beautiful tone as once said by Wynton Marsalis, who Mr. Nowak met while on tour with the Brooklyn Phiharmonia in the 1970s and remains a longtime friend. It was used by Mr. Nowak in many concerts of Baroque music at Carnegie Hall and elsewhere. It can be heard on his performances of the Bach orchestral suites with the Marlboro orchestra on Columbia Records, and the recording of the Baldassare Concerto with RAI National Symphony Orchestra. Nowak enjoyed an impressive career spanning five decades. He is the former principal trumpet player with the Kansas City Philharmonic, the Robert Shaw Group, the Mostly Mozart Festival, Marlboro Music Festival, the American Ballet Theatre, Festival Casals, Inc. With his brother, Jerry Nowak, he co-authored The Art of Expressive Playing, published by Carl Fischer. Toward the end of his career he lived in Hong Kong and lectured, taught and performed throughout the Far East. He was a professor and soloist with the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and founding professor with the Korean University Academy of Performing Arts. He was also a guest lecturer at the Shanghai Conservatory and assistant conductor with the Vietnam National Symphony, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra tour of Japan, Myanmar Symphony, and the Pan-Asian Chamber Orchestra, Calcutta. Nowak played on numerous recordings of the Marlboro Orchestra under the direction of Pablo Casals, who in February of 1970 wrote, Henry Nowak is an excellent trumpet player with a beautiful sound, a solid technique and an outstanding musicianship. I have known Mr. Nowak for years and he has played under my direction as a member of the Casals Festival Orchestra and at the Marlboro Festival. I have admired him as a soloist and in chamber music groups. His students include David Krauss, Principal with the Metropolitan Opera, and references include Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma and Rudolf Serkin. Couesnon Monopole F/G Trumpet. (Piccolo) 1960's Vintage, Rare, Collectors
Rare, Collectors: Couesnon Trumpet in F/G. Letter N on the 2. Valve right side, as well as Crest and Conservatoire Paris on the left side. Letter B on lead-pipe receiver. The instrument feels and sounds typically French-styled. There is undoubtedly reach into the classic Maurice Andre / Selmer sound and style. Within its context, the instrument bore is unusually/ interestingly large at 11.56 mm (0.455), which I measured at the first valve pipe. Bell diameter is 120 mm (4.724 inches). I find it warm, open and forgiving. I have never spotted evidence of any previous repair on this instrument. The lacquer sparkles and tiny blemishes are hard to spot. Please zoom in on the area of the leadpipe in line with 2. Valve, to see light surface scuff in the lacquer here. I don’t want to buff it too vigorously. The valves are quite pristine and glide beautifully. This instrument is a tribute to great master-craftsmen of its time. Devotees will know that Couesnon serial number records were lost in a fire, (two, in fact), and so the serial number 37495 confirms little. The last digit is not penned in, but this confirms that it is a 1960s vintage. Four other mouthpieces will also be supplied, that I have found to work well on the instrument. They have been altered in a way that they can only be fitted to this instrument. Their outer shanks have been specially milled to take the place of the removable/ tunable lead-pipe receiver; consequently, bypassing the need to use cornet shanks. I found this innovation to be very successful. These pieces are as follows. Jupiter 10 ½ C. Engineered and nickel-plated identical copy of the Amati 7EW that I use on my YTR 9830 (My favorite). Please note that the Instrument is in South Africa. Small shifts I will absorb. USA CANADA MEXICO – 211 USD. Europe/ UK/ Middle East – 147 GBP or 162 EUR. Sub Saharan Africa – 2245 SA Rand. Rest of world 237 USD. Arrival in country of destination should not exceed 4 days. Reference will be supplied. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions. I hope that this special and rare trumpet continues to pass through hands of those who admire it as I have. The item “Couesnon Monopole F/G Trumpet. I have had this horn in the collection for two years now and it is an excellent Triebert Moderne’Long Bell’ Piccolo Trumpet- Triebert Moderne was an alternative export name. This’Triebert Moderne’ is exactly identical to the Couesnon & Cie. Monopole Conservatoire Long Bell piccolos. Its larger bell allowed a piercing yet sonorous sound w. Hich attracted the attention of the great players such as’Bud’ Herseth, which he used in the Firebird and Ravel’s Bolero. This was the main player in the piccolo market before Selmer! Its most famous use would be in Dave Mason’s Penny Lane solo for the Beatles. It comes with its original case, two original leadpipes (Bb & A) and also including a nice piccolo beginner-friendly Bach 7E Mouthpiece. In excellent condition, I would say lacquer is around 96% and is in immaculate condition – closet queen status! This is a Couesnon (Paris) Monopole Star long-bell piccolo trumpet with added fourth valve and two mouthpipe bits, one for Bb (with a cornet mouthpiece) and the other for A (with a trumpet mouthpiece). Couesnon never made a four-valve piccolo trumpet, as far as I know. The fourth valve, here, was expertly added, together with a new lead pipe, by a very skillful technician. The added parts were left as bare, unplated brass. The original silver plating is worn in typical places, showing that earlier owners used this instrument a lot. The valves and slides are in good shape: nothing is stuck, compression is good. There are no dents or dings. This is a loud, powerful piccolo, very well suited for big orchestral works. The intonation is good, with rather wide and flexible slots. Even after moving to the newer Schilke and Yamaha piccolos, Herseth continued to use this model for the D trumpet part in Ravels Bolero. Of course, it is fine for Baroque music, too. It comes with a worn, scuffed up cornet case but no mouthpiece. The item “Couesnon piccolo trumpet” is in sale since Saturday, February 18, 2017. Serial number is 41369. This instrument has given me excellent service since I acquired it used thirty years ago. Before then it had been repaired where the lead pipe curves down toward the third valve. There is a small dent in the second valve tubing. Otherwise the instrument is in great condition; the compression is excellent, the valves work smoothly, and the trumpet plays wonderfully. For more information about this brand browse to Horn-U-Copia. And select Couesnon from the drop-down menu. The letter N on the second valve (below the dented tubing) evidently identifies the person responsible for assembling the valve block; see the explanation at The Trumpet Herald. This is the type of instrument that David Mason played for the piccolo trumpet solo on The Beatles’s Penny Lane. See the photographs included in this listing that show the Beatles rehearsing for the Our World live satellite television broadcast at Studio One, EMI Studios, London, June 25th, 1967 photographer unknown; see The Beatles through the looking glass onion. Mason participated in this session; you can see his instruments as well as George Harrison clowning around with Mason’s Couesnon piccolo trumpet. Evidently Mason’s model was the Monopole Conservatoire, not the Monopole Star, but because the Couesnon factory was destroyed in 1969 it is impossible to differentiate models and date instruments according to serial numbers. If anyone has better information, please supply it in the question/comment area for this listing.
