I prefer wound to plain strings and have used a guitar sting for the “G” string with a bass ball end to hold it at the bridge. Piccolo bass is for the bass player who adventures to play some solo leads without having to learn the guitar; Great for over-dubbing with your standard bass parts. It plays and sounds great; a fun bass that sounds like a guitar! It is fun to crank it through a distortion box. The neck is slim, and has a great feel to it. The finish is a natural where you can see through to the beautiful wood grain. It is a great looking as well as sounding bass. The action on this instrument is very low and comfortable, and the pickups have high output which sound pretty awesome. The tuning is EADG one octave above a regular 4 string bass. Here’s a tune I recorded playing lead bass on a piccolo. Notice that what sounds like rhythm guitar and finger picked notes are actually chords played on the Piccolo bass. What a great way to cheat! Sounds like the guitar, but I did not have to learn how to play guitar, and I played it all with my fingers because I did not have to use a pick to get to the strings!
