First off what is a stave shell, well they give a fantastic explanation on there website that is located below.. Stave shells are comprised of vertically oriented pieces of wood joined with precision angles to form a ring -think of a barrel. After the shell is glued, it is turned on a lathe and then sanded before the finish is applied. This method of construction provides multiple benefits. Compared to a ply shell there is very little glue; glue does not resonate sound waves as well as wood. The other major benefit is the orientation of the grain. A stave shell is much less likely to go out of round and is very stable. This snare drum really represents the journey of a woodworker and attention to detail that is needed to create an amazing stave snare drum! Here’s some information on Stave snare drums. Unlike mass-produced drums, our approach focuses on individual craftsmanship and sound customization. We take the time to understand your preferred sound, wood species, shell size, finish, and hardware to create a drum that fits your style perfectly. This one of a kind stave drum was hand-made by a talented wood-worker in Toledo Ohio All quality stave shells consist of vertically oriented blocks that are beveled and glued to create a cylinder. Allowing the grain to run in its natural direction and the staves bonded without any unnecessary stress plays a significant roll in achieving this superior sound. By constructing solid wood shells in this fashion, it eliminates the deadening effect of multiple layers of glue. Having the bearing edges placed on the end grain also allows for maximum transfer of energy down and through the wood fibers. The advantages can clearly be heard in the natural resonance and projection stave shells produce. This piccolo snare drum sounds pure and pops, yet sensitive to light sticking. It works well in any musical situation.
