Tama Artwood Vintage AW523 Piccolo-Lug Snare Drum SHELL 3.25×14 Amber Maple 6ply
This is a vintage Artwood amber maple piccolo snare drum shell. This snare originally had the individual’two-way’ piccolo lugs (a total of 20 lug casings, one for each tension rod). You can install your own individual lugs on this snare (provided the diameter is not too large so they don’t touch each other, because the holes are rather close to each other), or you can install the Tama MPL style lug casings. Which have the same bolt pattern (distance between and diameter of holes for the screws). This is a thin-shelled maple snare. I counted 6 plies of maple, plus an inner and outer maple veneer. Imperfections on this snare shell have all been documented on the pictures. There is the lightest separation of the plies at the seam (see picture), but it is less than 1mm and is negligible. There is some normal some hoop wear to the shell which will not be visible when you install the heads. There are Zero chips to the paint under where the lug casings sit. The snare beds are fine as are the bearing edges, no damage to those. Chips behind the piccolo lug casings is a problem on these snare drums, this one doesn’t have that problem. I took pictures of each’panel’ between the lugs, and with the top and bottom heads removed. I’d give the shell an 9 out of 10 in condition for its age. You will rarely find a better shell.
