The Hammig family legacy of crafting woodwind instruments began around 1780, passing through eight generations and nearly 230 years. During the period between 1906 to 1920, Philipp Hammig developed his skills to a high level and eventually built instruments under his own name. During this period, he started learning the profession in his father’s workshop, then went on to Berlin to the firm Rittershausen to study specialized flute making. In 1959, Philipp Hammig’s son, Gerhard took over the family business; however, the flutes and piccolos remained in the name of “Philipp Hammig, ” as they are known today, after Gerhard handed over the business to his four children in 1994. Hammig piccolos are sought after all over the world due to the character found in their sweet, dark sound; a response found in such aged wood. SPECIFICATIONS. Professional handmade grenadilla piccolo flute by a renown German flute maker Philipp Hammig. This piccolo is very rare and collectible, a true piece of history! The wood is in excellent condition, but there is tarnish on the solid silver keys and headjoint (see photos). Pads look old, may need to be replaced. Solid silver headjoint and mechanism. Pitched at A442 Hz. Reform lip plate with wave-style design for easier and more focused articulation. 650/4 model. Open G# and reverse Bb/B keys (German system). Offset G. Long G key lever for ergonomic left hand position. Handmade in Markneukirchen, Germany. This rare, unique piccolo flute needs to be completely overhauled to be in playable condition. Comes in the original case with leather cover and velvet lining. The case holds the flute very well and securely and is in excellent condition! Very Rare CIVIL WAR Marked Band Piccolo, 69th New York Infantry, With VERY RARE ORIGINAL PEWTER “CHEATER” BLOWER. Scans show it all….. Very nice black ebony type wooden Civil War piccolo. Similar to typical fife, but shorter and could have been used in the regimental band or on the field like a fife. Has 4 metal keys to help produce a greater variety of notes. This one is also very scarce as it has identification. Used by the 69th New York Infantry, and faintly stamped on the barrel. Typical design, with nice aged patina. This one is unusual AND EXTREMELY RARE IN THAT IT HAS ITS ORIGINAL PEWTER BLOWER AS SHOWN IN MY SCANS. Very rarely seen now and not all that common during the Civil War. Called a “cheater” it was made to fit on a fife or piccolo, and attached/tightened over the hole, to enable playing by a soldier who was not able to play it normally. He could just blow in and the “cheater” directed the air flow across the hole as needed. Has the brass screw to tighten and adjust. The cheater is made of pewter, and has nice gray patina/appearance. Along with fifes, piccolos were popular musical instruments in many regiments, both in their bands and on the field. They were useful to sound the march and along with the drums helped the soldiers keep step. Also provided a martial, military sound and provided entertainment to the troops on the march. The sound was very military, very shrill, and carried well. They needed to fill the ranks with men, and more fifers were needed than were able to play them. So the cheater was invented for practice or for regular use. Very rare to find one still with its original instrument. This one has clearly been on this same fife since the Civil War. A fife, and measures 12 1/8 long. About 5/8 diameter at the ends. Very good condition overall. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!! This is a 1880 – 1886 Piccolo in good condition. Two pad missing, crack in ivoy mouth piece. This is a very old instrument in good condition for its age. Cocus, ivory and cocus head, nickel silver keys and ferrules. Key Holes System: 6 keys, modern style key cups, direct mount, post and rod. The joint cork is very old. All keys work good.
